Observation Studio
Based in Portland, Oregon, Observation Studio engages a legacy of craft borne out of the abundance of the Pacific Northwest to create timeless and sustainable places for contemporary culture. We pursue the highest and best use of local resources at every scale, from sites to buildings to materials. Our work is responsive and resourceful, striving to create dignified places of shared experience where the pragmatic and the poetic are critically important, each informing the other.
Our work looks deeply into the relationship between material culture and society, experimenting through abstraction, creating a careful balance that avoids nostalgia for the vernacular or the sparsity of modernism. This process mixes and subdues influences to bring forth thoughtful and evocative solutions at every scale.
We collaborate with our clients, constituents, and craftspeople to create architecture that embodies their values and transcends expectations through close observation and engaging conversations. We are careful stewards of project resources and the natural resources each building requires, fostering healthy spaces for those who use and construct them. With a fluency that comes from a lifetime of working with our hands, we study the potential of materials and environments to develop resourceful, resilient, and economical solutions that are both timely and timeless.
Observation Studio has been named 2026 Best Small Firm in the West by Architect’s Newspaper and a winner of Design Vanguard Award recognizing leading top firms across the globe by Architectural Record Magazine along with multiple state, national, and international project recognitions.
